Students ‘brawl’ in video game tournament finale

Using video game characters like Mario and Princess Peach to fight to the death may sound slightly morbid to some, but for students in the Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament on Tuesday, it means game on.
“Make sure you are ready to win or lose dramatically and have fun while doing it,” said  Branden Armendt, special events coordinator for the Cat’s Den, who’s hosting the event.
Participants will be playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a Wii video game that is an, “incredibly fun, often hectic, but always entertaining fighting game in which characters from Nintendo games and Sonic battle it out,” Armendt said.
Greg Chandler, events coordinator for the Cat’s Den,  put together the tournament so students could meet other Super Smash Bros. players and find the UK Super Smash Bros. champion.
Armendt said the tournament has a double elimination format and gamers have been battling in teams of two.
He said players from all different skill levels participate, and students without a teammate are assigned one.
“Whether they are expert brawlers or have never played before, they are welcome to come play and experience the fun,” he said. “Anyone can show up to play or watch and support others, but we usually get a crowd of about 30 people who are ready to brawl it up.”
Armendt has participated in past tournaments and has always enjoyed them.
“Whether I have done very well or lost miserably, I always had fun mixing it up with those who show up and trying out my gaming skills,” he said.
If students aren’t quite ready to “brawl it up” like Armendt, he said they will still enjoy watching the tournament.
“They will have the chance to see some really great players who will do amazing move combos,” he said. “It is really interesting seeing some of the things that happen during the battles.”
The brawl’s finale will begin Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Cats Den. Participates will be awarded double the points and everyone is encouraged to participate.
