Phi Delta Theta third fraternity in 5 months charged with hazing

Phi Delta Theta follows Sigma Phi Epsilon and Lambda Chi Alpha as the third fraternity in the last five months the university has charged with hazing.

Associate Dean of Students Tony Blanton said although the Phi Delta Theta and Lambda Chi Alpha charges are hazing violations, they are “different types of incidents.”

Blanton said the Office of Student Affairs was notified Thursday, Nov. 19 of Phi Delta Theta’s violation.

“We were notified by someone who would have had information that they could relate to us, but I can’t say who notified us,” Blanton said. “I don’t want to put anyone in a bad situation.”

The Kentucky Epsilon chapter president Ben Talley did not return messages from the Kernel.

Blanton said he was not exactly sure why two UK chapters were found in violation, but said it had something to do with the fraternities’ initiation schedules.

“Part of it has to do with the fact that a lot of fraternities, especially, are getting ready to start their initiations and do that kind of thing,” Blanton said. “When it kind of starts winding down in the semester and this is when you hear about it.”

The two fraternities are currently under investigation, Blanton said. However, like Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Delta Theta received a letter from the university informing them of their charge, and will have until after Thanksgiving break to respond to it.

Blanton said Lambda Chi Alpha and the Dean of Students office have already scheduled a meeting to discuss their response. Phi Delta Theta has not responded to the university’s charge.

  1. I don’t know about everyone else, but I am tired of independents reporting on greek affairs. Its like if Dickey V were to commentate for ice skating…

  2. This article is very unprofesional. They shouldn’t be aloud to publish an article in which they have no information. The author of this article has no actual information on the topic.

  3. ALOUD? SERIOUSLY? BWHAHA!

  4. Why would anyone want to rush Phi Delt anyways? Seems like a total waste of time to be hazed by a bunch of losers. Well, unless you’re into that sort of thing, if you know what I mean. (They are in sorority circle if you catch my drift) Sounds like the two above responses were written by Phi Delts anyways. Nice grammar idiots.

“I is a Fhi Dhelta and I thoughts that this here artkle was writtin bad because I is no everything bout’ jernalism. Signd the prsidient of Fhi Dhelta fraterneti.”

  5. thanks for taking the heat of lambda chi, stay classy phi delt

  6. Phi Delt apparently got busted for having pledge drivers. Sorry the Greek Community has designated drivers so members do not end up drunk driving. Sorry for being responsible.

  7. What did the Dalai Lama say to the hotdog vendor?
    “Make me one with everything.”

  8. I’m a 1970 graduate of a great school. I had no use for social fraternities then and still have no use for them. I think the University should have nothing to do with these ridiculous clubs that interfere with the academic goals of the school. If the children that ban together in these gangs want to play their silly games then it should be up to the students and parents who pay for them to disband them forever. The University should neither support the clubs or condone them in any way.

  9. I’ll bet hebintn was a real hoot to hang out with in college.

  10. @hebintn: 2008 graduate here, and I was equally as disgusted with the hazing and just general misconduct that occurred at the fraternities and sororities on a near daily basis. They were embarrassments to the university in the five years that I attended. Reputations and prestige are not built on out-of-control parties and trashy houses, but on academics and to an extent, athletics. Athletics is a self-supporting operation; fraternities and sororities are not. Dump them already!

  11. It’s real simple. If you don’t like what you (mis)perceive to go on in fraternities and sororities, then DON’T JOIN ONE. We probably don’t want you anyway. And consider for a moment…you might actually have no idea what you’re talking about anyway.

  12. The funny thing is, the spot light on Fraternity and Sorority hazing is very intense, while there is as intense or even more intense hazing incidents that barely make a blip on the radar because they are done in sports teams, bands, and other clubs.

On another note, it is historically noted that all those precious dollars and support of the University to their “Foundation” is done so by alumni from the Greek Community. Can’t cite it specifically, because it’s not worth my time, but research shows that 80+% of donations to Universities come from their Greek alumni.

  13. Insider? Seriously?

80%? You must be insane to think that 80% of donations are from the ‘Greek Community.’ Considering a large portion of the donations are not even from Alumni, more so research companies, this is just a lie.

    Signed,
Former UK Student who also feels the Greek Community is an embarrassment.

  14. I can’t cite it specifically, because it’s not worth my time, but research shows that 99.9% of Greeks are racist, elitist, money-grubbing, homophobic bigots, known for rape and other forms of abuse.

Do you see why it’s important to back up your claims with verifiable evidence? I could care less about what the greeks do, but I can’t stand it when folks just make up statistics. You could say I am annoyed 100% of the time by people like this.

  15. Students go to school for academics right? Go to the Uk Greek affairs website and everybody that puts down Greeks will see that they out perform the non-greek student body every year in GPA average.

But I guess your right, they are an embarassment to UK.

  16. Sorority GPA: 3.2171
    ALL Female GPA: 3.0916

    Fraternity GPA: 2.9725
    All Male GPA: 2.8851

Note: That the All Female and All Male averages are inflated because it includes the higher Fraternity/Sorority GPA that is included with the All University Averages, so the difference between fraternity/sorority averages is every larger than they appear.

Also, important to mention is that the small greek community at UK volunteered 44,575 community service hours last Spring alone.

But you are right, the greek community is a distraction from the under achieving students that aren’t Greek.

    http://www.uky.edu/StudentAffairs/Greek/statsS09.pdf

Get your facts straight before you point the finger at a group you know nothing about.

I am also a faculty member at UK that promotes Greek life and wasn’t in one myself because I see all the benefits that come from them.

  17. 80% of all statistics are made up on the spot. That joke aside, I don’t think several of you know what you’re talking about.

A side note, Greeks make community service mandatory. Without the greek system, people in their late teens and early twenties would typically not donate their time to any worthwhile cause because, let’s face it, this age group is very selfish. The Greeks place ideals in people that stay with them for their entire lives. I would have to argue that non-Greeks are more of an embarassment to our generation and university as all they care about is “getting their piece of paper (degree) and getting the hell out of college.” There’s a reason you GDI’s don’t get anywhere in life, your narcissistic and cyncial opinions of people that you perceive to be “better” than you make you feel worthless and therefore, naturally, you like to act out in frustration and blantant rudeness as you’ve demonstrated here. You honestly believe that as long as you go to class, and make good grades that you’re better than Greeks? Ridiculous. We don’t stop as class and good grades; we put in a great deal of effort in our college careers. The shear thought that you think you’re better than anyone else shows your true character and your ability to lump all Greeks into one category shows that you have the potential to discriminate.

It’s absolutely true that Greeks donate more as alumni than non-Greeks. If you’re looking for proof, there was a study completed a few years ago that has been posted for your viewing pleasure here, all 10 pages of it. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0254/is_n1_v53/ai_15163030/
If you need further documentation of this, ask our own Alan DeSantis or visit William T. Young Library. He was an SAE. Paul Newman, he was a Phi Tau. Newman donated millions to help kids with cancer all over the United States.

It’s funny that you believe that all Greeks are racist, womanizers or whores, etc. You clearly don’t have the tact to write out a legitimate response without making sterotypical references to a few of the things that have happened in the past, that are indeed negative but, do not involve the majority of the Greek system.

Has a GDI ever messed up? I’m sure they have. Should we hold you responsible for everything “your kind” has done in the past? No, we’re better than that.

Furthermore, how dare you claim that Greeks are not beneficial to a university. That is down right blasphemy and you should thank the Greek system on a daily basis that they exist and make universities better places for students. We control student government because we care enough to actually vote. We control UK philanthopry because we participate. We control homecoming because none of you GDI’s have ever cared enough to participate in our University’s extracurricular events so before you go blaming the Greek system for all of your self-esteem problems, I would suggest casting the blame on yourself and your pathetic life. I’m removing myself from the soapbox now.

  18. Well said my friend, well said. Way to put the GDI’s in their place.

  19. Damn, I guess they all just got schooled.

  20. No one is making excuses for these men and the hazing they are accused of. The reason you get such a strong response to these articles is they are rarely balanced with positive coverage of Greek affairs. Also, non-Greek individuals see it as an opportunity to “ban Greeks forever” when a few idiots screw up.
Obviously Greeks are a benefit to the university… Blanton said. “We’re investigating and working with Lambda Chi Alpha ….we’ll have a better Lambda Chi Alpha chapter on this campus in the future.” As proven above, Greek GPAs are higher; also, Greek retention rates are higher than non-Greek students. So, independents: if you didn’t get in, didn’t rush, didn’t care or your particular circle of friends didn’t think going Greek was the cool thing to do, fine. We’re not judging you for not joining. Please extend us the same courtesy.

  21. People who cucify the Greek Community for so called “Hazing” that they do not know any of the circumstances or what actually happened is beyond crazy. Let the facts be known they throw shots. Once again Greeks do way more than anyone else for this campus. The face fraternities get called out on hazing more so than other clubs or sport teams is stupid, as those other clubs and teams usually are the ones who haze much worse. Anything that is worth doing should come with hard work. In this PC world hard work is considered “hazing.”

  22. I was obviously joking — as I said, I could care less about what the greeks do. I don’t care about the whole “greek” vs. “non-greek” debate. It’s an absurd distinction and an useless debate. I just hate seeing people argue something and not back it up — and I think I made my point with an obviously fictitious statistic. Also, I love how you hate on so-called “GDIs” — way to encourage discourse on the matter!

  23. This is seriously a messed up situation from UK. I too, heard they had pledges AND ACTIVES who voluntarily drive. That is hazing? Wow, what is the world coming to? CAN YOU HEAR ME DEAN, AND UK??? Would you rather risk fraternity members driving drunk and making bad choices and possibly ending their lives and the lives of others. This is BEING RESPONSIBLE. UK is dumb enough on the statisitcs to know how many underage students actually drink anyway. So, why not have Designated Drivers to ensure safe streets of Lexington? I volunteer to drive for my fraternity all the time to prevent any horrid acidents from happening. But I do get reimbursed for it such as a dollar a ride…which is much cheaper than taking taxi’s and helps put gas in the tank. And I feel as if I’m doing community service for others. And others need to stop talking about GDI’s blah blah and other fraternities. SOME

  24. Unfortunately, student, you clarified something for everyone:

“The face fraternities get called out on hazing more so than other clubs or sport teams is stupid, as those other clubs and teams usually are the ones who haze much worse.”

You are basically agreeing that your organization (greek or not) hazes. That said, hazing to any extent is is still hazing. There is no slightly hazing or completely hazing; the only way groups are able to climb out of the tradition of hazing is through education and awareness.

    I recommend these two resources:

    http://www.stophazing.org
    http://www.hazingprevention.org

As for the Kernel reporting, I generally wait for the National Headquarters of a fraternity or sorority to hand down a judgement before I believe what is written. It is in the National organization’s best interests to hand down honest judgements to the chapter because dealing with these things and risk management can easily bankrupt any group. SigEp was one example. The fraternity cannot afford to risk lawsuits when they had the opportunity to fix it before.

  25. I like how “come on now” says: “The shear thought that you think you’re better than anyone else shows your true character and your ability to lump all Greeks into one category shows that you have the potential to discriminate.”

Right after he/she said: “There’s a reason you GDI’s don’t get anywhere in life, your narcissistic and cyncial opinions of people that you perceive to be ‘better’ than you…”

How do you reconcile these two statements, dude? Way to lump all non-greeks into one category. Wump wump.

  26. I graduated from UK almost 30 years ago. My greek friends used to tell horror stories about hazing incidents and I’m glad that in 2009 pledges don’t have to worry about physical violence or public humiliation. When I heard that a fraternity was in trouble for requiring the pledges to serve as Designated Drivers I assumed it was the setup for a dumb joke. That is hazing? Really? I’m embarrassed that my university is pursuing this investigation. This fraternity has turned the negative aspects of hazing into a positive by requiring their pledges to stay sober and to make sure that their over-served actives make it home safely. Instead of punishing the Phi Delts UK should be benchmarking their program for use in every greek organization.

  27. Old Man x 1000, I didn’t cast the first stone. I also never said I was perfect or that I was a speaker for the netire Greek body.

Don’t you have something better to do with your “old age” than try to dispell Greek life on school newspaper websites?

Also, GDI is shorter than writing out independent.

I reallly don’t have as much time as you do.

  29. ok non social greek, my fraternity “hazes,” we have a designated driving program in which both actives and new members drive. The newer members drive a few more times but EVERYONE drives. This is “hazing,” and all hazing is hazing, so instead lets risk our members by not providing sober drivers and risk the rest of the UK community. Nice logic.

  30. I’m not trying to DISPEL it. Also, GDI is an offensive term in my neck of the woods. And yes, I live in the woods. Specifically, I live in a neck within the woods — an actual neck. It is an odd living arrangement.

  31. I’m trying to follow “Not A Phi Delt’s” logic.

Let’s see if I have this right…Phi Delts are a bunch of losers because their house is in Sorority Circle (thus surrounded by hundreds of sorority girls).

Wow! Any heterosexual male would immediately grasp the advantages of this arrangement…but, oh wait…now I see why you don’t get it.

  32. silly frat boys!!!

  33. BY THE WAY, IS UK REALLY THIS DUMBDFOUNDED????? ALL fraternities HAZE on campus. It isn’t cool if you don’t. My roomates are all in different frats and they all got hazed like crazy. Nothing with alcohol, but perhaps some funny things. UK is dumb, just let the greek system be. If noone is getting hurt, WHOP DEE DOO. Let people have fun. But for driving??!?!! To help others stay off the streets, potentially saving lives of others on the roads for safer streets? GO AHEAD UK, LET MORE DRUNK DRIVERS ON THE ROAD. Everyone has a SOBER DRIVING PROGRAM WITHING THEIR ORGANIZATIONS. It’s for the better, not the worse, and all members do it. HOW THE HECK IS THAT HAZING? UK, WHY DON’T YOU HEAR THE HONEST FACTS FOR ONCE? KERNEL, WHY DON’T YOU PUBLISH SOMETHING THIS LEGITIMATE?

  34. Who ever wrote this article is definitely a GDI. And… All you clowns against the greek system here at UK are probably the kids that didn’t get a bid from which ever frat you rushed… And the reason is simply they thought you were a tool and couldn’t handle a little hazing. And knew it would lead to articles like these.

GDI’s get a life, and get some pants without cargo pockets please.

  35. Shut. up!

  36. Old Dude(Bill Green)

Can’t believe anyone would call driving fellow students, that have had more than the legal amount of alcohol, home “hazing”. Back in my day hazing was disgusting, to put it mildly, but in my opinion the rewards and the lifelong friendships were well worth it. If you didn’t want to pledge, no one forced you to
join a fraternity. Thus, charging the Phi Delts is bullshit. I would think the Dean of Students has something better to do. Could he have a personal agenda againist frats or preceeded as a favor to someone else with an agenda?

  37. hey bros lets just al go bro it up and chill. i mean us bros like to get hazed with the bros
