In June, the former Kentucky Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity was charged with hazing. Now, just five months later, another fraternity faces the same charges.
The UK chapter of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity has been charged with hazing, violating the university’s Code of Student Conduct, said Associate Dean of Students Tony Blanton.
The fraternity’s international headquarters contacted the Office of Student Affairs on Tuesday afternoon, saying they had received information about potential hazing “right then and there,†Blanton said. Representatives were sent to Lexington and arrived at the chapter’s house around 9 p.m., where they temporarily suspended the chapter’s activities and “procured all their ritual equipment,†Blanton said.
Blanton said a police officer went to the house with the headquarters representatives, but it was standard operating procedure.
An e-mail was sent from the fraternity’s international headquarters to the Kernel on Wednesday, Nov. 18, notifying that chapter operations were temporarily suspended until investigation of the events is completed.
Michael Haag, president of the Lambda Chi Alpha UK chapter, received the letter from the university notifying them of the violation. Haag said he and the chapter are still trying to process the information.
“We still don’t have a lot of information from nationals or the university,†Haag said. “Hopefully by Monday or Tuesday we’ll find out more.â€
Blanton said since the chapter received the letter late Thursday, they are now responsible for responding and scheduling a meeting with the Office of Student Affairs within the next few days.
Blanton, though notified of the headquarters’ investigation Tuesday night, could not comment on the situation until the chapter was notified of their violation Thursday.
Because the Code of Student Conduct does not have specific penalties for each violation, Blanton said he is not sure what steps the university will take next.
“I haven’t heard their side of the story, and I won’t guess or assume until I’ve heard from them and their response,†Blanton said. “We’re investigating and working with the Lambda Chi Alpha headquarters and hopefully we’ll put it together … in such a way that we’ll have a better Lambda Chi Alpha chapter on this campus in the future.â€
I’m glad you all reposted this article with a more negative tone towards Greek life.
Why would you interview the associate dean of students? Not the dean of fraternities? Probably because he said no comment. Way to go get a credible source. If you can’t find out what actually happened, please leave it up to the national fraternity to settle it.
How are you supposed to report a fraternity charged with hazing in positive way? The associate Dean of Students seems like a pretty credible source to me…
well the article says that the dean of students was notified of “potential hazing”. there are no details of what they might have done. the definition of hazing covers just about anything someone could do. they could have had them outside of classroom building doing the zombies impersonations. this is how stupid it is.
The associate dean of students is higher in the organizational charge for Student affairs in the office of the vice president. They know what is going on with regards to greek affairs. They are a credible source.
