Lambda Chi Alpha chapter charged with hazing

The UK chapter of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity has been charged with hazing, violating the university’s Code of Student Conduct, said Associate Dean of Students Tony Blanton.

The fraternity’s international headquarters contacted the Office of Student Affairs Tuesday afternoon, saying they had received information about potential hazing “right then and there,” Blanton said. Representatives were sent to Lexington and arrived at the chapter’s house around 9 p.m., where they temporarily suspended the chapter’s activities and “procured all their ritual equipment,” Blanton said.

Blanton said a police officer came with the headquarters representative, but it was standard operating procedures.

An e-mail was sent from the fraternity’s international headquarters to the Kernel on Wednesday, Nov. 18, notifying that chapter operations were temporarily suspended until the investigation of the events was completed.

Michael Haag, president of the Lambda Chi Alpha UK chapter, received the letter from the university notifying them of the violation. Haag said he and the chapter are still trying to process the information.

“We still don’t have a lot of information from nationals or the university,” Haag said. “Hopefully by Monday or Tuesday we’ll find out more.”

Blanton said since the chapter received the letter late Thursday, they are now responsible for responding and scheduling a meeting with the Office of Student Affairs within the next few days.

Blanton, though notified of the headquarters’ investigation Tuesday night, could not comment on the situation until the chapter was notified of their violation Thursday.

Because the Code of Student Conduct does not have specific penalties for each violation, Blanton said he is not sure what steps the university will take next.

“I haven’t heard their side of the story, and I won’t guess or assume until I’ve heard from them and their response,” Blanton said. “We’re investigating and working with the Lambda Chi Alpha headquarters and hopefully we’ll put it together … in such a way that we’ll have a better Lambda Chi Alpha chapter on this campus in the future.”

  1. What situation? This article is super-vague.

  2. Stellar article, lots of information in this one. Another great publication about Greek life by the Kernel.

  3. Wow. How about getting some facts before reporting assumptions and rumors on what is supposed to be a “news” site.

  4. This is news and it comes from a credible source–the national headquarters. Standard operating procedure for a national fraternity to suspend operations while an investigation is occurring when it is a serious matter…and this apparently is. Good objective job of reporting the news that is available at this time.

  5. A superb piece of journalism. Actually, it’s just another typical vague piece attempting to crucify greek life at UK after so many positive things we’ve accomplished. Largest teams at DanceBlue… greeks. Most philanthropy events on campus…. greeks. Most positions in student org’s… greeks. Street cleanup… greeks. You get the drift. Report us some facts instead of speculation of possible accusations or investigations.

  6. Personally, I am a native English speaker, and a trained and experienced journalist. I couldn’t understand a word of this story though!

  7. What a reporting peice of tripe! It says not much other than alchol for the resons of suspending this Zeta. No one seems to know anything other than the chapter was suspended.
“me says”, just what did you find so great about this snip it of an article? I guess you must be anti Greek, correct?

  8. wow sounds like the greeks like to cover up their beatings with philanthropy.

  9. “Good objective job of reporting the news that is available at this time.” Agreed. Obviously all of the details are not yet available; the fate of the chapter remains to be seen, but let’s not act like there’s too little information to constitute a story.

To the person who said “Report us some facts instead of speculation of possible accusations or investigations.” Did you read the article?

    Chill, Greeks.

  10. “wow sounds like the greeks like to cover up their beatings with philanthropy.”

    hahahaha too true.

  11. “wow sounds like the greeks like to cover up their beatings with philanthropy.” “hahahaha too true” too bad most of the GDI’s aren’t involved in anything on campus other than DDR and band. The greeks don’t charge GDI’s for ruining Haggin field after an intense game of ultimate frisbee or wearing hollister to class so get off our backs.

  12. process of being greek

Ok seriously, the greeks on this campus do to much for this campus to be bad mouthed after a accusation like that. Greeks kill them selves trying to improve the campus, so get off our back!

  13. I’m sure they were all in robes corn holing goats while chugging natty light. Greeks only bring ignorance to our campus. A true sore to the academic purpose of the institution.
