[...] Tobacco Ban Praised at Conference Kentucky Kernel (University of Kentucky), 2009-11-19 Author: Katie Perkowski Summary: After months of intense debate, the moment has arrived. Thursday, the start of the campus-wide tobacco ban, coinciding with the 34th Great American Smokeout, is finally here. At a news conference Thursday, members of the Tobacco-Free Campus Task Force highlighted some of the implementation and treatment plans, while encouraging tobacco users to quit. Thursday is a historical day for UK, said UK President Lee Todd, and the plan puts students, staff and faculty first. Co-chair of the task force Ellen Hahn said between Nov. 11 and Nov. 17, 1,282 UK employees were anonymously surveyed, in which 26 percent said they would be more likely to quit using tobacco because of this policy. In the same survey, 76 percent said the policy would reduce secondhand smoke, and more than 50 percent said the policy would help them quit using, Hahn said. From Sept. 10 through Nov. 13, 667 students were surveyed. Around 34 percent said the policy would reduce their tobacco use, and 27 percent said they would quit in the next 30 days at that time.
Another useless ban that won't help smokers quit. While non-smokers have a right to complain about second hand smoke, smokers should have the equal right of being allowed to smoke outside in a designated area. Instead of trying to implement a stupid ban, why don't they focus on implementing useful programs and workshops on the dangers of smoking, and how to get people to quit.

The headline is misleading, seeing that 52% of students polled by the Kernel OPPOSE the ban

Copy Idiot:
First of all, the newspaper is called the Kentucky Kernel. It is a publication distributed on UK's campus. Any person "with the most basic of logic" reading the Kentucky Kernel would know that UK was short for the University of Kentucky. You need to find something better to do than make ridiculous comments about commas.

This article is incoherent. On the first use of a school name, you should spell it out. As in, University of Kentucky, rather than UK. The summarized quote in the third paragraph is not even remotely close to AP style. The fourth paragraph is entirely unintelligible. It is missing even the most basic of logic, such as commas. Did 1,282,26 percent say they would be more likely to quit using tobacco? At this point in the article, I quit reading. Hire a copy editor.

If R.J. Reynold's donates enough money the board of trustees will get rid of the ban or at least let them name a new building. The Joe Camal Cancer Research Center anyone?
