Students get chance to become highrollers in poker tournament

Get your sunglasses and card covers ready because this year’s Cat’s Den Texas Hold-Em Tournament is upon us.
The tournament will begin 7 p.m. Monday in the Cat’s Den and last until Friday.
Each year, the Cat’s Den holds a qualifying poker tournament and the winner is sent to the Association of College Unions International regional tournament.
“It’s a free event and people will all start with the same amount of chips at the beginning,” Branden Armendt, marketing and Foreign Language & International Economics and Spanish senior and Cat’s Den Special Events coordinator.
Pre-registration is over, and according to the Cat’s Den’s website, 71 people are registered to attend.  Forty on Monday night and 31 on Tuesday night.
But if you’re not pre-registered, then don’t worry about missing your opportunity — everyone is welcome to attend and register the night of the games.
“The opening rounds are on Monday and Tuesday,” Armendt said.  “You can show up on Monday, and if you lose, then you can go to Tuesday’s games too.  Show up on one or both nights.”
The tournament rules are officially designated by the ACUI and will be adhered to, Armendt said.
“All rules are based on the ACUI’s poker rules,” Armendt said.
The grand prize winner will take home a football signed by Rich Brooks and a signed copy of John Calipari’s book, along with being sent as UK’s representative in the ACUI’s regional tournament in February.
“All of the other qualifying tournaments for pool and stuff are held in January, so you get bragging rights for a pretty long time with this one,” Arment said.
“There’s not much else to do on a Monday or Tuesday night, so you might as well (come),” Armendt said.
The final rounds will be held on Thursday, November 19.
If you want to participate in The Cat’s Den’s Texas Hold-Em Tournament come to the Cat’s Den on Monday or Tuesday at 7 p.m. The event is free.
