Las Vegas-themed paintings will no longer been seen around UK’s campus and surrounding areas. This weekend wrapped up the 2009 Homecoming events.

The overall Greek winners for Homecoming events were Farmhouse fraternity and Chi Omega sorority, and the overall non-Greek winner was the Black Student Union.

Wildcat Roar, the official Homecoming pep rally took place Friday night in Memorial Coliseum and featured former Saturday Night Live cast member Tim Meadows as the host.

Student Activities Board Director of Traditions Bryce Moffett said the pep rally went well and UK head coach Rich Brooks and UK head coach John Calipari made appearances as well.

SAB chose Meadows from a list of four of five comedians to be the host based on a student survey done last semester, Moffett said.

Although the Homecoming parade was cancelled because of rain, the floats were still judged in the parking lot in front of Wildcat Lodge.

The Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Triangle fraternity float, which had a pyramid and working slot machine, won the contest out of about 12 floats.

Judges looked at creativity, originality, portrayal of theme and overall effect when deciding the winner, said SAB Traditions Committee Chair Allison Vanderhorst.

Some organizations participated for the first time.

First time participant Pi Kappa Phi fraternity worked with Kappa Delta sorority to build their float.

James Bishop, social chair for Pi Kappa Phi, said the organization’s float had a “wedding chapel” theme and the fraternity built the stage, while the sorority decorated the float.

“For the first one, I am pleased,” Bishop said

Although the Cats did not come out on top, two winners were crowned at Saturday’s game.
The student body chose Justin Linne of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and Barb Jackson of Chi Omega sorority as their 2009 Homecoming king and queen. (Linne is also a member of the Kentucky Kernel staff).

Jackson said she was just excited to participate in the Homecoming events.

“Honestly, I’m just amazed to be on the field,” she said.

Moffett said Homecoming events overall had good attendance and SAB is already planning for next year’s Homecoming.

Applications for Homecoming 2010 SAB positions are available now through the SAB Web site, (www.uksab.org).
