Barry Rice, a senior defender on the UK men’s soccer team, was named a second-team preseason All-American, according to CollegeSoccerNews.com.
The Parma, Ohio native earned third-team All-American honors last year, and became the first Conference USA player in history to win Defensive Player of the Year in consecutive seasons, 2007 and 2008.
A new statistic, headers won vs. headers lost, was recorded in 2008 because of Rice’s ability in the air. He won 189-of-218 (87 percent) of contested headers last year, according to UK Athletics.
UK senior swimmer Eric McGinnis won a gold medal as part of the United States’ 4×100 relay team at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia.
McGinnis swam the third leg of the relay and helped the team set a new WUG record with a time of 3:14.74, according to UK Athletics.
He is scheduled to compete in three more events at the Games — the 50-free, 4×200 freestyle relay and the 4×100 medley relay.
Incoming freshman Ashleigh Albrecht will compete in the 64th U.S. Women’s Open Championship at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa., according to UK Athletics.
Albrecht earned her place in the tournament, which will take place through July 12, by competing in the Women’s Open Sectional Qualifying rounds in North Carolina.
She will make her tournament debut Thursday, teeing off at 2:42 p.m. in the day’s final group.
