UPDATED JUNE 12, 11 a.m.: Sigma Phi Epsilon has drafted an appeal in response to their suspension, according to a member of the fraternity. The appeal has been granted a hearing set for June 15 with the University Appeals Board.Â
Â
UK’s chapter of one of the largest national fraternities has received a two-year suspension following a hazing incident, according to the associate dean of students.
The Kentucky Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon, located on Pennsylvania Avenue, was suspended on May 8 after alleged hazing involving personal servitude during the pledging process. The fraternity also violated a temporary suspension put in place during the investigation that began on March 5, said Associate Dean of Students Tony Blanton in an e-mail to the Kernel.
According to a letter from the Dean of Students Office to Sigma Phi Epsilon President Aaron Tutt, the organization is “excluded from university premises and all other privileges granted to registered student organizations.†The letter warns that violation of the suspension could result in disciplinary expulsion. The organization has the option to appeal the decision to the University Appeals Board.
Sigma Phi Epsilon will be eligible to apply for university registration on July 1, 2011.
Attempts to contact Tutt were unsuccessful by press time.
This is outrageous, this article needs to be retracted immediatly. the university of kentucky sig ep chapter is full of excellent individuals who do nothing but serve their community to the fullest.

I’m glad to see the University making a stand against hazing. Hopefully this will encourage the current brothers of Sig Ep to change the course of this chapter and influence change across their region and the nation. Hazing is handed down from class to class because “they did it to me.” There is no tangible benefit to hazing that can’t be achieved through a more comprehensive education.
If you only knew the actual terms of the University of Kentucky’s alleged “hazing” case against SigEp you would retract your generalized comments and most definitely rewrite this article. Oh and by the way, in the article your refer to the “pledging” process…according to UK Greek bylaws, you just committed a “hazing” act. Just an FYI, those guys are not the fraternity that should be punished for “hazing” when no such actions in which the rest of the world defines “hazing” were ever committed!
Funny how the University isnt going after the one fraternity who was actually caught in the act of hazing a little over one year ago. But then again, those boys who shall remain nameless, have their parents money to influence the school’s decisions on such matters; while Sigma Phi Epsilon must watch their legacy drift away from their grasp. If any of you Sig Ep boys are reading, the student body knows the truth.
From,
THE PEOPLE OF UK!
This fraternity meant the world to me and every one of our members. It was taken away from us because the university felt they needed to make an example out of somebody and we drew the short straw. We had a great amount of young leadership that was trying very hard to turn our fraternity around for the better. However, we were not given a fair chance to do so. Thanks a lot UK.
From,
Brother
The SigEp Fraternity should not be singled out for alleged events that have taken place.
Perhaps adult mentors/advisors could be helpful to fraternities in general, as well as keeping a closer watch over ALL the fraternities during certain key periods to ensure that guidelines are followed. People make mistakes and life is about learning right from wrong and giving second chances.
The Fraternity needs SUPPORT from the University and to be given an opportunity to reorganize and improve on past imperfections. I am confident they have the leadership to make it what it needs to be according to University guidelines. They are working very hard and this is of the utmost importance to them.
This is an unbelievable group of fine young men. These brothers have each others backs. Fraternities such as SigEp are helpful for young men and something they take with them throughout life. I hope the hearing will be fair.
a Parent
The University Of Kentucky wants to move all Frats off Campus. UK is land hungry and will do anything to rid itself of Greeks. Just look at the number of frats back in the 70s, 80s, 90s and now today. See the pattern. Soon there will be zero on campus frats.
Its clear fratirnities are being farmed off on neighborhoods. They take up space and inhibit growth plans. It was once said (UK is a neighborhood cancer.) All you have to do is drive around it to see the truth of it. Uk respects no one and has no institutional control. Bigger is not better its just land greed.
They won the appeal!
