New trails challenge Kentuckians to explore outdoors

The Kentucky State Park system launched its first Trail Shape challenge this month, Director of Sales and Marketing LaDonna Miller said. The program’s goal is to try to address the health initiative and to encourage people to get outside, Miller said.

The program consists of 16 trails, which total almost 40 miles. The program can be completed in one year, according to the Trail Shape Web site.

“We call this Kentucky’s own backyard and the natural resources that we have in Kentucky, some states just don’t have,” Miller said. “The trails are designed to get you into parts that you have never seen.”People can participate in the Trail Shape challenge for free and can complete the trails on their own time in one year, Miller said. Throughout the challenge, hikers need to document their journey through photos and a journal, the Web site said.

On the Trail Shape Web site, it says the journal must include “start and end dates, date of each individual hike, time, weather conditions, and any unique observations and experiences along your hike.”

The trails start at one mile and go all the way up to 4.5 miles, and there is no certain order that someone has to complete the trails in, Miller said.

At a lot of the parks included in the challenge, there are park naturalists to give participants the history of the parks and other information about the trails, Miller said.

If the challenge is completed, the participant will receive a Trail Shape certificate, a custom bandanna, and entry into a drawing for a two-night stay at a Kentucky State Resort.

The winner of the drawing has the choice of which of the 17 state resorts where he or she wants to have their two-night stay, Miller said.

“There’s a personal sense of accomplishment and some of the hikes are as long as four miles so if you participate in the entire program, you’re going to be physically fit and have seen some of the most gorgeous sites in Kentucky,” Miller said.
