Milking on the way to class: Club hosts event to learn about dairy

By Ali Hammond

The UK Dairy Club is hosting an event called Dairy Awareness on Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside of the W.T. Young Library.

“We will be handing out cheese, milk and ice cream samples made by farmers in the state of Kentucky. We will also have a fiberglass cow for the students to milk as they walk to class,” said Dairy Club President Curtis Coombs.

Coombs said the Dairy Club is an organization that allows students to learn more about the dairy industry and is open to any major. Two years ago, the club took a trip to Louisiana State University and Mardi Gras to visit other dairy organizations from around the country. The event is set up to make students on campus aware of what local dairy farmers have to offer.

“This is the first time for this event, but we feel it will be a huge success,” Coombs said.
