Celebrating Mother Earth-UK Greenthumb hosts fair to raise awareness of nature

For the fifth year in a row, UK Greenthumb and Earth Days in the Bluegrass are coming together to celebrate the environment and raise awareness for a cause.

Earth Days in the Bluegrass is a month-long series of events including films, music and workshops designed to promote the responsibility of individual and community-based awareness.

Sarah Wightman, a member of UK Greenthumb, organized an Earth Day Fair to give everyone the opportunity to learn about how they can help the environment.

“Earth Day started in the 70s and it’s just a way to promote awareness of the environment and to better understand how to take care of the Earth,” Wightman said.

The fair will have free food, prizes and various do-it-yourself activities including bookmaking, tie dying T–shirts, making seed bombs and more.

“Volunteers from Earth Days in the Bluegrass are going to be standing by to give more information about the various ways we all can help our planet,” Wightman said.

Wightman wants the Earth Day Fair to be a source of information where people can come and learn about the different ways to save the Earth. She said she hopes the turnout will be enough to change a handful of students’ thoughts on coal burning.

“I’m hoping that the fair will become an annual thing for UK students in the future,” she said.

Along with the Late Night Film Series and UK’s environmental studies program, the activities for the month of April aim to inform students on how they can reduce their carbon-foot print.

The Earth Day Fair will be on Wednesday in the Student Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
