Education is the key to PREVENTING drug abuse and addiction. Scare tactics do not work because most people who try various drugs don't have a problem with it. All of the DARE type propaganda does a great disservice by painting these dire pictures. When young people start partying, they see plenty of people who are able to use various drugs and still get decent grades or hold down a job. They then conclude that they've been lied to about drugs. 3-5% of the population have a problem with addiction. Then there are the people categorized as "abusers." Someone else can explain the difference. Random use of any drugs is not a good idea. Educate yourself before experimenting. Also, realize that some drugs will trigger or reveal underlying psychological illnesses/problems. Beware! The laws are already tough on drug dealing. I think these problems needs to be solved jointly by parents, teachers, social policy makers and students themselves. The laws also need to get tough to catch hold of the drug merchants.
