Urban farmer to talk on community food systems

By Courtney Chaffin

Organic products and healthier foods have been making headlines in the news recently, and UK will present an event to discuss one trend in farming.

The UK Gaines Center for the Humanities will present the 2009 Lafayette Seminar, “Growing Neighborhoods: Will Allen and Community Gardens” at 6 p.m. Monday at the auditorium of the Lexington Public Library downtown.

The seminar will kick off with Will Allen, founder and CEO of Growing Power, a national nonprofit organization supporting the development of community food systems. He will speak about the importance of local community food systems.

Allen, who has more than 50 years of experience in farming, will share his farming stories along with his motivation to share his farming products with the less fortunate urban populations.

Seminar participants will reconvene at noon Tuesday to discuss the ideas presented by Allen.

The Monday evening presentation featuring Allen is free and open to the public and no registration is required. Participation in the Tuesday discussion session is also free, but enrollment is limited to a maximum of 40 people and registration is required.
