Conference for ‘starving artists’: Group plans event around humanities

April 7, 2009 by News Staff · Leave a Comment

A dance ensemble, an opera performance and a lecture by Kentucky’s poet laureate will enter the spotlight during a conference Wednesday.

The Starving Artist Conference will take place from 2:30 to 8 p.m. on the 18th floor of the Patterson Office Tower. The English undergraduate organization, Writers’, Orators’ and Readers’ Discussion, or W.O.R.D., hosts the conference.

Leah Baines, a member of W.O.R.D. and organizer of the event, said the group designed the conference to celebrate the creative talents of UK students from a variety of disciplines.

“We believe the conference will forge and encourage interdisciplinary arts collaborations, as well as strengthen the campus and Lexington arts community,” Baines said.

The activities in the conference will include a UK Opera performance at 4 p.m., a performance from the UK Dance Ensemble at 5:30 p.m., and three panels taking place throughout the event.

Kentucky Poet Laureate Jane Gentry Vance will give the conference’s closing speech.
