Throughout the past year, the Kernel editorial board has taken Student Government to task when necessary and praised when needed. But in order to continue some of the positive trends this year’s administration has attempted (notably proposed changes to Dead Week), Ryan Smith is the best candidate for SG president.
Smith is SG’s current Board of Trustees Advisory Board chair, and we feel that gives him a large advantage over the other two candidates. If Smith is elected SG president, he’ll receive a position and vote on the Board of Trustees to represent UK students.
“That position carries with it a lot of responsibility and a lot of influence,” Smith said in a Tuesday Kernel article.
He’s right. That’s the one area SG and its president can legitimately have an impact on this campus. At the meetings, he’d be interacting with the most influential people at the university and that’s an outlet to effect change. The fact that Smith has served on SG’s Board of Trustees advisory boards means it’s likely that Smith is already familiar to the trustees as well.
Along with his Board of Trustees vote, Smith also plans on implementing a program called “Tally Cats,” which was created by the Emerging Leader Institute and summit group. It’s a points system that would track students’ attendance at events and accumulated points could be redeemed for rewards, according to the article. For those students who are extremely active on campus, this system would reward them for their dedication.
His idea of a peer-advising program could also have a positive effect on the university and its students. Pairing a younger student with an older, more experienced student could help them get more acclimated with the university and could possibly help improve retention rates.
It also seems that since Smith is currently involved in SG he will continue to work to implement the Dead Week plan started by Tyler Montell’s administration. It’s more likely there will be a smooth transition between administrations because of his involvement.
Most importantly, Smith is the best man for the job because he has goals that are realistic for his job title. You can’t expect to change the world as SG president.
Which leads us to Colby Khoshreza. He will probably make a great run at Smith because of his involvement and connections on campus, but it seems like most of his ideas are just too farfetched. Again, the job comes with a big, fancy title, but the SG president doesn’t really have a lot of power to make fundamental changes to the university.
Tyler Owen, the self-proclaimed “average guy” of the election, doesn’t really seem to have any solid plans in place and has no idea what he’d be getting himself into. The SG world is competitive and Owen just isn’t up for that.
Ryan Smith is the best candidate for the position and has the most experience. He knows the ins and outs of SG because of his involvement and his practical plans make him the most likely to succeed in the job.
I couldn’t have put it better. Colby is completely inadequate for this job.
As for my opinion of the Kernel, I shall keep that to myself, but I would like to point out that it is very easy for the Kernel to give an endorsement when three of the Kernel’s Editorial Board Members are working with Smith/Hayes. Ryan and Kelsi seem to have built a campaign around OTHER people’s ideas and hard work taking many of their ideas from people in the Summit Program that are actually working for Colby. Yes, there will in fact be a smooth transition (if Ryan is elected) because obviously (looking at this past year) there has been few things that SG has accomplished and it’s really simple to pass over an administration of broken promises and pointless boards to a Ryan/Hayes administration where we will see a lot of the same things happening: NOTHING. Are you, Ryan, willing to sacrifice OUR university just so you will have a place to “hang out” next year (aka-the SG office)? As for the Smith/Hayes mentoring programs, most all colleges have programs that serve similar purposes (again, copying the ideas of others). I believe that Colby truly means to help average students, diverse students, achieving students, and greek students as well succeed and feel like they truly have a voice on this campus. His ticket covers all of those areas and brings new faces to SG connecting students in all organizations on campus to their governing body whether they be black, white, gay, Muslim, Christian, Asian, or Greek. How does Ryan Smith plan to include everyone? Where are their original ideas? Are we going to see nothing happen all over again?
TO UK FAN and other doubters:
Please do yourself a favor and vote for Smith. He will continue the positive trend in SGA from the last two years…keep the ball rolling!
Whoa,…Colby. You based your campaign completely on teh initial actions of Smith/Hayes. Everything looks exactly like theirs and of course, they announced first. Your profile pictures came form profilepants.com, your website looks exactly like theirs, your videos are just like obama’s. Everything you do is copied. At least Ryan has achievable goals. You just talk about ideal diversity to garner votes from non-greek affiliates which is shameful. You bashed the greek system days after you lost the endorsement by saying on facebook in your status something about “Making change for those who are not part of an elite group.” You have a vindictive nature, and that doesn’t belong in UK’s SG. You spout “making change” and cleaning up “messes,” but when have you have micromanaged everything you’ve ever touched. The CCO is a mess. You show that when people support you, you work with them. When they don’t support you, you do everything in your power to make most obvious that you don’t like them. Having you represent our university would be a great downfall and embarrassment.
I don’t know how you could possibly say that Colby has copied everything considering they announced this campaign back in SEPTEMBER. Maybe the official announcement wasn’t until after Ryan’s BUT they also waited for everyone to add profile pants (which everyone on the entire world uses those) and to launch the website the night of the official announcement. I know you all you Smith/Hayes and current SG people are scared to death right now. And you should be…
And to the Kernel..I would like for you all to print all that Ryan has achieved in his advisory board to the Board of Trustees..I would like to know. Does being the chair of a little advisory board make him better than Colby who is the Executive Director of the CCO and has held an executive position in SAB?? In organizations that make a different EVERY SINGLE DAY on this campus.
SG DOES have the power to make change to the student body, unlike you have said. People believe they can’t because no one has actually TRIED to do anything before. Colby and Laura will, enough said.
Are you kidding, I seriously doubt that anyone in SG or Smith/Hayes is worried about this election. The Greek vote essentially summed up the thoughts and concerns on UK’s campus. Colby has proven his ignorance by hosting a SHAC debate that was clearly rigged and was called out for it. What an embarrassment. He’s also accusing others of conspiracy. He also called out student government on the iPod issue when he himself used iPods last semester to promote the CCO. What’s worse? This is a respected newspaper and these articles will be on here for years. Google Colby Khoshreza and I’m certain no intelligent organization would hire him. During his time at the CCO, multiple directors have quit due to his micro-management. This is political conniving at its best and it’s so evident. Colby’s campaign is consistently run on the basis that everyone (in his opinion) is stupid. We can see through these cheesy slogans and vague ideas and no one will be fooled by them. SG absolutely makes a difference everyday. They allow programs like the CCO to exist in the first place.
I find it to be telling that no presidents of CCO organizations are vouching for Colby. He is a micromanager and working with him is not an enjoyable experience. Colby has spent his time as CCO director outfitting the CSI with seasonal decorations (cute, yes. A good use of funds, no.) and attending meetings. Has Ryan Smith accomplished anything noteworthy during his time on the Board of Trustees, quite frankly, no. But if I had to choose somebody to represent me, I would gladly choose Ryan Smith over Colby. Colby is unrealistic, and embarassing. Have any of you all ever tried to have a conversation with this kid? I cringe everytime I read his facebook statuses such as “We are dedicated to improving your quality of life”, “this time we have more of an opportunity to change the system”. Give me a break. He says he is going to fix the problem of student health insurance. My god, nominate this man for President of the US… Step aside Barack, not only has he instituted a ‘no smoking ban at his high school’ (direct quote from Colby, I guess this means he forced everyone at his high school to smoke?), he also has the cure for the insurance problems riddling our nation.
Quite frankly, I do not want to have to read another quote from Colby in the Kernel, or anywhere else for the matter. Do yourselves a favor, and don’t vote for this kid.
I would rather transfer than listen to this kid be quoted in the Kernel…it’s so unfortunate that such a thing could happen. If he wins, fml.
the fact that you complain about decorations that the members of the cco purchased with their own money is pathetic. if you were at the debate when ryan tried to call colby out on the ipods you would know that while student government has spent thousands of dollars on ipods colby gave away one refurbished ipod shuffle. nice burn though. also just today ben duncan personally emailed all the fraternity presidents in a desperate attempt to get their support…which also demonstrates how much he lied to the kernel when he said he was in no way involved with the smith hayes campaign. calpari_fan’s comments smack of a student government insiders trying desperately to defend their work…guess what it doesnt do a good job. get over it. its real easy for smith to pull a john mccain and use change rhetoric, but that all it is rhetoric. guess what, nobody knew who he was before this camapign, and he makes montell of phelps look like supper stars. and no_colby, shut the hell up. just because you are pissed that barrack won dont try to bring that conflict here. get over it. its about time student government got flushed of the low quality ilk like your selves and are replaced by people who actually care about making it better. cry me a fuckin river.
You were my sun
You were my earth
But you didn’t know all the ways I loved you, no
So you took a chance
And made other plans
But I bet you didn’t think that they would come crashing down, no
You don’t have to say, what you did,
I already know, I found out from him
Now there’s just no chance, for you and me, there’ll never be
And don’t it make you sad about it
You told me you loved me
Why did you leave me, all alone
Now you tell me you need me
When you call me, on the phone
Girl I refuse, you must have me confused
With some other guy
Your bridges were burned, and now it’s your turn
To cry, cry me a river
Cry me a river-er
Cry me a river
Cry me a river-er, yea yea
I know that they say

am i the only one that sees what a true leader Colby is? i’ve worked with him before and he is truly an asset to UK. even when i poured coffee on the keyboards in the SAB office, he understood that i was just angry and lashing out at the executives. i’m graduating (hopefully) this year, so i won’t have to worry about who will be in office next year. but it’s sad to see how far some people will go just to have a place to hang out next year (SG office). i’m in no way mad about being looked over for the chief of staff position–i respect that decision. now don’t think i’m being defensive, i would say this for the other side, too. i’m just trying to keep everything fair! so please, vote for colby and vote for me on TRL.
p.s. don’t let the fact that facebook is banned in the CCO office affect your vote!
I could care less about this election, but I do find it truly funny that any candidate that runs on a platform that is beyond the status quo (that is to say, doing nothing aside from remodeling the SG office and creating numerous “task forces”) that people label the candidate as “unrealistic.” Way to lower the bar!
Nice language, since you’re the kind of person attracted to Colby’s campaign, I suppose that’s appropriate with all the fowl language and such. It wasn’t an ipod shuffle either. It was an ipod nano, and he bought two. Get your facts straight. I doubt he needed to do that as you state he allegedly did. If anything, I would have done it to make the loss that much more embarrassing, Anyways, I’m going to go get some dinner. Maybe I’ll take the “supper” stars montell and phelps?
This board is hilarious!
I want to listen to that song now but, mostly just to make fun of jackie and that campaign.
I’m oblivious to the most obvious fact in the world, I mean, really? Come on. I hsould have realized this by now…
jeeze a spelling joke…nice. props j rupp, you seem like a rare intelligent addition to this board! yeah darby and the kernel endorsement of the same group of people they complain about on an almost daily basis? first class journalism.
hey i know i wrote on another topic but i just wanted to show you the email my fraternity president showed me that ben duncan just sent out. i had thought that an earlier editorial in the kernel saying that he was acting in the interest of smith hayes was just bitching and complaining but since i say this email i believe the connection. plus i checked and colby has 13/15 at large senators who are greek and a total of 19 other senators so why does ben duncan think he can speak for all of IFC? as a greek it pisses me off

Fellow Greeks,
It is imperative that we, as the Greek community, support our candidates. Please head to http://www.uksga.org and vote for Smith/Hayes for President/Vice President. It takes two seconds.
This is going to be a very close election. WE MUST VOTE TO ENSURE OUR VOICE IS HEARD!!
Smith/Hayes UNDERSTANDS the concerns of the Greek community and will be our biggest advocates as we fight to keep our recruitment in the fall and work to secure housing properties within the new “Greek Row.” Now is NOT the time to let SG take a step backwards. We need leadership that has experience within the Greek community and will take our concerns to the administrator level of decision-making.
Please do us, and the student body as a whole, a tremendous favor and head to http://www.uksga.org and vote for Ryan Smith and Kelsey Hayes.
Thank you. Have a great day! Please call me with any questions/comments, I would be able to provide numerous examples of why Smith/Hayes is the best choice for UK!

Ben Duncan
President, Interfraternity Council
Okay, that’s great, but what have you proved other than that as IFC president, he’s endorsing what all the fraternities voted for, and therefore doing his job. Your argument is ridiculous.
There is no doubt in my mind that Ben thinks more of Smith/Hayes than he does of Colby’s campaign. Who wouldn’t? Ben is entitled to his own opinion, which as usual, the Colby team has tried to take away. We have freedom of speech at UK last time I checked. Funny how Colby is such an “advocate” for “civil rights” but doesn’t understand why you can’t take away those rights just because someone doesn’t think you’re good for the job. Nice try on the SHAC debate btw.
Don’t try to say that in the Kernel, he mentioned he was unbiased and would remain that way. He never said that. What he did say was that at the time, he had to remain unbiased until the organizations that he represented could democratically make their decision.
GROW-UP!
“so why does ben duncan think he can speak for all of IFC?”
Simple. Because Ben is president of IFC.
Also, the vote was cast for greek endorsement and smith + hayes won and therefore, IFC says that smith + hayes is the logical choice.
It’s a good thing that student government hardly ever actually effects anyone on campus. How many of you can actually name 5 things that Tyler Montell did for this university? (and your list only counts if you aren’t in SG.) Can any non SG members/supporters list 1 thing? Exactly. Its nothing more than a title so that a group of students can feel important. It’s just another extension of the Greek System’s total control over campus. Whoever the Greeks support, win. Bottom line.
The reason why Ben Duncan sent that email today was because he is clearly desperate for Smith/Hayes to win because they are scared! What would they ever do without having the SG golfcart to themselves?? I’m sorry, I understand he is president and all, but if it was that important, why did he wait to send it out at 3:45p.m. this afternoon and not yesterday or early this morning? hmm, because, Smith/Hayes is scared to death that Colby and Laura are actually campainging and getting people attention. It is also very hypocritical of the Kernel to crticize Montell and other past administrations and then endorse Ryan as such a “fit” president for the job because of his ONE advisory board and how that doesn’t not compare to the 2 executive positions Colby has held. I’m sorry, anyone with logical sense can not make a fair comparison. And no, I can’t list 5 thing Montell has done for us. That is why you should vote for Colby/Laura, because they will.
How successful has that ONE executive position been? I see no difference from when Lexy was there. When he was at SAB, all he did was manage promo, (which should be the extent of his influence at UK) He micro-manages everything which is why people can’t stand working for him. You can run around with your arms flying about in the air to get attention, which is kind of what he does but, are people listening? I think not. If they are listening, they’re turned off. I’m sure they’re not, but let’s say they are scared, in which case you guys are more than welcome to back off a little. If you think you’re winning, then prove it. Don’t campaign tomorrow. You’ve turned this campaign ugly with your facebook messages and immature grimaces in debates.
Wow. I’m so voting. For. Colby
Cool
And I’m so. voting. for. Ryan. so I. guess. that. cancels. your vote. out.
No one said Colby had it won, its merely a statement that they are giving them a close race. I think it’s very realistic Ryan would win, but Colby and Laura’s team are working their butt’s off to get the job done. I don’t know about any facebook messages as a member of all groups.
This is sad. All of you people clearly care about Student Government enough, otherwise you wouldn’t be wasting your time on this message board. You all are the people who are the people who do nothing but whine and bitch about SG and its shortcomings, but never bother to take action.
You come up with poor excuses, saying, “I’d never get involved with SG because they are a bunch of idiots who are only interested in redecorating the office.” Sad. None of you have ever stopped by the SG office or even explored avenues on how to get involved and POSITIVELY INFLUENCE CAMPUS. All you do is get big behind your computer, tearing down those who are trying to make a change. Most of you are uninformed about what SG does on a day-to-day basis, and never bother to find out the truth (similar to perceptions about SAB).
Yes, SG has had a bad history and a terrible track record. It’s reputation has been deserved in the past, but in the past two years, SG has gotten back on the right track. If you care so much, I’d suggest that you run. Go ahead–I’m calling you out because I don’t think you will. Take the higher route and try and make the change that you criticize others for failing to be.
In closing, I hope you feel good about yourselves. You can say that the work SG does is minuscule and won’t have an impact–but at least the people who work in that office are actually putting in an effort to make our campus better.
You would love for Colby and Laura’s team to not campaign tomorrow. That way, Smith/Hayes might not lose by as many votes. I’m glad C&L can actually get students to support them, instead of forcing unhappy pledges to campaign for them. Technically, isn’t that hazing? Looks like someone needs to micromanage Smith’s campaign. Don’t ask Colby to do it; he’s too busy gettting hundreds of students’ votes.
Oh well, may the best candidate win and may he win fairly. Don’t worry, Colby will.
Actually, the only reason I came to read this article is because I didn’t get a Kernel today and I wanted to verify something a friend of mine told me about in this article. I read the comments and then felt the need to express my view point. If SG doesn’t want to hear negative comments, how can they ever improve their operations? Nothing in the world can run on positive comments alone.
Does part of SG’s busy work schedule include coming onto the Kernel to make threatening/angry/immature posts towards those that disagree? If so, I can see why this organization is so busy. I am amused that a member of SG would accuse others of being strong while sitting behind a computer screen, when I highly doubt during your campaign trails you would speak to someone face-to-face on campus in this manner. That would certainly not win their vote.
I am well informed of what goes on within SG (I have close ties with a few people involved. Not releasing any names over the internet.) Also, it’s not hard for anyone to go on SG’s website and read the Event Calendar, which most months of the school year is completely blank (except when a Greek event takes place or an election is coming up.) I understand there are monthly and weekly meetings. But my point is, most people on campus never see, feel or know the results of such meetings. There’s a major disconnect between what the SG does, and the results the rest of the student population sees.
I seriously doubt that people in sg are doing this. Most of them were campaigning today and in meetings while most of these post were written.
Yeah? Let’s take a look at the CCO calendar. Oh wait- there isn’t one. let’s take a look at the CCO website- oh wait- theres only a front page and the others are three years old. Well- as a last resort- let’s go to fusion’s or happy hands- Huh, those are either a year old or don’t exist either. Well, I guess that’s what you get when you vote for “progress”…nothing but empty promises as experienced in the cco. I wouldn’t talk about hiding behind computers. looks like you colby supporters are pretty good at that too right now-hypocritical much?
I dont know if all of that CCO stuff was directed towards my comment or not, but that is exactly my point. All of these important student involvement things don’t keep the general population on campus informed. (Also, just in case that was directed towards my post, I am not a supporter of any of the candidates.)
Good luck tomorrow, Ryan Smith and Kelsey Hayes, and to the rest of SG. We realize you have a lot at stake in this election. It explains why you all are desperately leaving pathetic comments any chance you get. Anything to “try” to sabotage the other campaign. Why aren’t you lashing out at Owen/Uebel? I guess cause Colby/Laura are an actual threat. Instead of insulting them, take the opportunity to let everyone know about some non-Greek affiliated things Ryan has achieved/accomplished since being at UK. I know, I couldn’t think of any either.
Like I said, good luck tomorrow, SG.. I mean Smith/Hayes!
i doubt they’re worried about owen/uebel. Since they highly regard their “normal” non-greek constituencies, If they do anything, it’ll be to steal votes from colby’s campaign. kind of like a ross perot.
Well, I didn’t know anything about that. I may absolutely consider Smith/Hayes at this point.
i hereby throw my vote to Ryan Smith and Kelsey Hayes. They have been an asset to SGA for the past several years and when initially considering my vote, I have noticed their passion and drive for reachable change.
Although you might have seen me around the campus strutting my stuff working the Khoskasdasks/Laura campaign… i have come to the realization that my work ethic in the CCO can no longer be unnoticed. Truly under Colby’s leadership we would spend hours a day and many hundreds of your dollars decorating our office with useless decorations for all the holidays and random festivities. This was basically my job position and I was proud of it, until I realized that I there were so many other people on campus doing far more then I could.
This election isn’t about he said/she said… Smith/Hayes is just the better candidate and my former team (Coby/Laura) and I announce our incompetence.
Thank you for your time and that’s all I have to say.
I don kno wut to say. Mama always say life’s lika box’a choclates.. u neva kno wut u gonna git.
nice try
interesting that jillian works for the Colby and Laura campaign but…. man! did you really call her out! haha i like the word “strutting” too evokes the elitism student government is known for! nice! i know its stuff like that worthless post that makes me vote for colby and laura and laugh everytime i walk by the student gov office
pathetic
Really, cause it makes me knot want to. How could you vote for Colby? Ew.
Yeah, you’re right. I do micro-manage everything. I also don’t know how to read election rules and break the majority of them. That’s why I’m asking the UK student body not to vote for me.
if you dont vote for Smith/Hayes, you are basically in support of rogaine.
This is the REAL JILLIAN ROGERS.
1. WHY DON’T YOU SPELL MY NAME RIGHT IF YOU’RE GOING TO PRETEND TO BE ME.
2. You have NO RIGHT to say what you’ve said. Your immature childish antics once again confirmed why I am a STRONG supporter for COLBY AND LAURA. You are no better than the candidate you support yourself. All I have to say is GROW UP!
wow, if this is the way that Smith/Hayes crew is going to act, I may have to take an interest in student government. I really hope they don’t win. This is far too immature. How can people this immature run the Student Government?
From the looks of reading all this, Colby clearly started this thread mess. I’m so glad smith/Hayes will win tonight.
Colby and Laura may have started the conversations on here, but they weren’t the immature ones who were pretending to be other people just to be jerks. But like I said earlier, its a good thing SG doesn’t really effect anything on campus since immature people like that are now taking over SG.
I got beat…oops.
if you want people to actually believe that you’re Colby, then start spelling his last name right. that might help a little bit.
until then, we know its the same immature people who have been posting comments all along.
