Students can get a taste of Africa during an event Wednesday featuring traditional music, food and poetry.

“Taste of Africa” is organized by members of the African Student Association and sponsored by the Student Activities Board and will include a fashion show featuring traditional African clothing from various countries, African music, traditional African food and poetry. It will take place in the Student Center’s Grand Ballroom at 5 p.m. as part of UK’s Cultural Diversity Festival.

“During festivals that’s what we do. We dress up, eat and dance,” said Ernest Taylor, a Ghana native and president of the African Student Association.

In addition to music and entertainment, attendees will also get a chance to taste traditional African food including Madagascar chicken, jollof rice, plantain chips and African eggplant and squash.

Members of the African Student Association are hoping that this event can show people a different side of Africa than what is commonly depicted on television and they hope by the end of the event people will see Africa in a more positive light.

“My hope is that people see another face of Africa,” said member Myranda Ouattara. “It’s always about war or AIDS or people dying because that’s the way the media portrays it.”
