UK Student Socialists Union will provide an alternative to the political norm with their event “Barack Obama and the American Empire.”

Transylvania University political science professor, Jeffrey Freyman will be speaking Wednesday in the Student Center. Freyman was chosen to speak because he is an excellent speaker and well informed, said Joan Braune, president of UK Student Socialists Union.

Freyman has taught political science since 1980 and, among other activities, is a former member of the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee.

The UK Student Socialists Union is a new group that started last spring. Freyman will be the third speaker sponsored by the group.

The group focuses on socialism and political views with three main focuses including the campaign for free tuition, living wage for campus workers and war.

“I think there is an over confidence of liberals,” Braune said.

“Barack Obama and the American Empire” will take place Wednesday at 5 p.m. in room 111 of the Student Center.
