Students can see the “world of opportunities†available to them during a workshop this weekend.
UK’s Center for Academic Resources and Enrichment Services, or CARES, is hosting their second World of Opportunities Workshop (WOW) Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in room 230 of the Student Center.
“This event gives students a chance to network, find summer jobs and learn about things that they will have to deal with later on in life such as credit scores,†said Rhonda J. Webb, the sophomore counselor for CARES.
As part of the event, an etiquette lunch will take place in room 214 of the Student Center at 12:30 p.m. and workshops will take place between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Some of the workshop topics for this event are “From Backpack to Briefcase: Life After Graduation†and “How Does Who You Are Fit What You Do?: Values on the Job.â€
“We hope to help students examine their values and then use those values to guide their decisions about careers,†said Tina Bryant, a senior staff psychologist in the UK Counseling and Testing Center, who will be co-presenting one of the discussions on values related to choosing a career.
“WOW is providing students the opportunity to gain a variety of knowledge in one setting,†said Miranda Martin, the junior and senior CARES counselor. “It is our hope that students will take advantage of the opportunity to network and learn skills that they will utilize in their life after college. Attending conferences, such as the WOW, is essential in personal and professional development.â€
Meichelle and Curtis Gibson from Murfreesboro, Tenn., are the keynote speakers for this event as they will be on hand to discuss “Finding Your Passion.â€
“They’re coming to tell people that you do your best work when you do what you love to do,†Webb said.
The event is free for everyone. There will be giveaways, and the Gibsons will be selling CDs and journals at this event.
