Cold weather follows Cats in first SEC loss

With ice storms attacking Lexington, the UK men’s basketball team brought the chill with them to Oxford, Miss., Tuesday night.

The Cats fell 85-80 to Ole Miss, behind a cold shooting night. Shockingly, junior Jodie Meeks was one of the coldest Cats. Meeks came into the game averaging 26.1 points per game, good for third-best in the NCAA. Meeks finished with 21 points, but six of those points came off 3-pointers in the waning minutes of the game, as UK’s fate was all but sealed.

The Cats fell into a game plan Ole Miss head coach Andy Kennedy had talked about during a teleconference on Monday. His Rebels constantly switched defenses, either a 2-3 zone or man-to-man, but made sure to shadow Meeks and help down low on sophomore Patrick Patterson. The defense proved to be effective as UK shot a mere 38 percent from the field.|

After getting in early foul trouble, Ole Miss junior David Huertas scorched the nets, as one of three Rebels that scored 20 points. Huertas notched 21 points, with 19 coming in the second half, Terrico White matched Huertas with 21 and Malcolm White recorded 20.

A new jersey couldn’t even help the Cats (16-5, 5-1 Southeastern Conference), as junior Ramon Harris changed numbers from 22 to 5 before the game. Harris, who was sent to the hospital during UK’s 61-51 victory over Alabama on Saturday, returned to action on Tuesday and recorded three points in nine minutes of action.
