Student Government calls for funding

Student Government has issued a call for student groups to request funding from the $51,000 left to be appropriated in the organization’s budget.

Last year, SG’s Appropriations & Revenue Committee ran out of money in February. This year, the committee’s funding was divided into $60,000 to be spent in the fall semester and $40,000 to be spent in the spring.

In an e-mail sent to students, A&R chairman Adam French said the committee had $59,195 left in the budget for 250 student groups. After Wednesday’s A&R meeting, that number went to $51,000, French said in an interview with the Kernel Thursday.

“In the past, groups would come if they needed funding or not, and we would give it to them,” French said. “Now we’ve taken a much more prudent look at each request to see what we can do to help.”

Of the money that was appropriated as of Dec. 3, 37 percent went to Senate special projects, 27 percent went to general funding grants, 23 percent went to service grants and 13 percent went to club sports grants, according to French’s e-mail.
