UK Police issued a safety advisory Thursday night after a female student reported being followed by an unknown suspect through campus, according to a campus-wide e-mail.
The man — described as white in his 30s, wearing blue jeans or dark pants, a waist length dark coat with a hood, and a baseball cap — followed the student from the Lafferty Hall area through Central Campus and across Rose Street. Around 8:25 p.m., between the Mining and Mineral Resources Building on Rose Street and the W.T. Young Library, the man grabbed her but she was able to resist and run away toward the library, the e-mail said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact UK Police at 859-257-1616 or #UKPD from any cell phone.
A safety advisory e-mail was issued around 10:40 p.m. Thursday night but UK Alert was not activated and no text messages were sent. UK Alert is only issued when imminent action is required, UK spokeswoman Kathy Johnson said. Only in on-going instances like an active shooter will a UK Alert text be sent, Johnson said.

Proves the point that only you are responsible for your own safety. She was lucky and able to resist & flee. The police were only “minutes away” and the safety advisory was issued over two hours later! If she had been raped or murdered would an UK Alert have been issued within the hour? Wow – such an effective, proactive response. Haven’t you learned anything yet?
