Horror film series revamped as ‘Scarefest’

As horror movies have hit theaters in celebration of Halloween, the Student Activities Board and the Late Night Film Series are teaming up to give students the chance to see four classic scary movies.

“Scarefest,” the two-night, four-movie series, starts Tuesday with “Jaws” and “The Exorcist.” On Wednesday, SAB will show “The Silence of the Lambs” and “The Birds.”

“ ‘Scarefest’ originated from last year’s double feature,” said Katie Ising, the director of cinema for SAB. “Instead of doing a new scary movie, I wanted to do some classic ones because there are some really good old ones.”

Last year’s event, titled the “Creature Double Feature,” only screened two movies, one new, “Saw 4” and one old, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.” This year, Ising said she decided to stick primarily with older movies because she didn’t think there would be any new scary movies out in time worth showing.

“The classics are just better anyway,” she said.

Ising said she researched various top-10 lists of Halloween thrillers and felt these movies were among the best. Ising also said she wanted everyone to have the opportunity to see “Jaws,” the Steven Spielberg hit about a great white shark that terrorizes an island town.

The other movies feature a twisted human who eats flesh, a demon-possessed girl and a flock of vicious birds that attack people.

“They really are great movies,” Ising said. “If you have never seen them it’s a great opportunity to see them on the big screen.”

Besides the free movies, Ising said there will also be candy and popcorn, and if students really want to get into the spirit, they are more than welcome to dress up in costume.

“Scarefest” starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Student Center’s Worsham Theater. On Thursday and Friday at 10 p.m., the Late Night Film Series will show “Ringu,” the original Chinese adaptation of the American film “The Ring,” and “Army of Darkness” in the Worsham Theater. Both events are free to the public.
