Honors frat starts UK chapter

A new fraternity has been established on campus, and students don’t need to rush to join — they just need at least a 3.0.
Sigma Alpha Lambda, a service-oriented, national leadership and honors organization, now has a chapter on UK’s campus for students interested in service and leadership.
Lauren Sexauer, president of the Sigma Alpha Lambda UK chapter, said she saw an advertisement for the organization and called the national headquarters to learn more.

“I was looking to broaden my environment on campus,” said Sexauer, a business management and political science senior.
The fraternity, which has 86 chapters across the country, is co-ed and is open to anyone on campus. Applicants must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher, and must have completed 12 or more credits, Sexauer said.
The members are currently focusing on fundraising for DanceBlue and are trying to get a team together to dance at the event, said Rebecca Ralphy, the vice president of the fraternity.
Next semester, Sigma Alpha Lambda hopes to choose a non-profit organization to donate most of its time to, said Ralphy, a Spanish and communications junior. But for now it will focus on DanceBlue.
Sexauer is also president of Sigma Kappa, a sorority on campus. The honors fraternity does not recruit members the way social fraternities and sororities do. Instead of rush, the national headquarters does most of the recruiting, Sexauer said. Currently, the UK chapter has about 80 members.
Sigma Alpha Lambda is also not as formal as social fraternities, Sexauer said. The fraternity does not have to follow a specific tradition like other Greek organizations.
Sigma Alpha Lambda meets once a week at the Student Center, and Sexauer said anyone interested in joining can contact her through the group’s Facebook page, “Sigma Alpha Lambda – University of Kentucky Chapter.”
