Annual Greek Week kicks off Sunday

By Rosalind Essig

Sunday marked the first day of Greek Week 2008, a tradition dating back almost 50 years on UK’s campus. The Panhellenic Council, National Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council chapters will be participating in activities on campus this week.
Greek God and Goddess, Greek Olympics, Anchor Splash, and the midnight movie are open for all UK students to come watch, said Susan West, dean of fraternal and sorority affairs.
Tuesday’s event is the Anchor Splash, hosted by Delta Gamma and Delta Sigma Phi. The event will include water relays, a belly-flop contest and the Mr. and Miss. Anchor Splash costume contest, said Caitlin Dungan, president of Delta Gamma.

Anchor Splash is free to the public but donations and concession proceeds will go to the Delta Gamma and Delta Sigma Phi philanthropy organizations, Dungan said.
“Hopefully it will be a great turnout this year as it was last year,” said Dungan, “We’re really excited about it.”
Keisha Hilson, president of Delta Sigma Theta, said Greek Week is a good event for the different Greek organizations to come together, and it helps facilitate connections for future events.
“All those factors are working together to try to bridge the gaps between the three councils,” Hilson said.
